| A product of West Ham's renowned youth team, Rio is a composed and elegant, creative central defender, one of the very brightest talents in English football.He made his debut for West Ham as a teenager and quickly became established in the Premiership attracting rave reviews. England Under-21 honours followed and it was no surprise when he was given his full international cap in November 1998.Hugely popular with the Upton Park faithful, the young Londoner was awarded the Hammer of the Year trophy in the same season. Now a recognised international, Rio has the potential to go on to become one of England's greats. There was talk at the beginning of this season of Rio moving to Roma in Serie A but speculation ended when he signed a new long-term contract.Still the speculation continued, with a reported £15million offer from Leeds United, that prompted Hammers boss Harry Redknapp to slap a 'not for sale' tag on his talented defender.It seems almost inevitable that sooner or later Ferdinand will move but in the short term he remains an integral part of the West Ham side. |
