| An experienced and capable keeper, Raimond van der Gouw joined Manchester United from Arnhem in 1996 knowing full well it was unlikely he would get a place in the Reds' starting line-up unless Peter Schmeichel was injured or rested.Van der Gouw played seven games in the 1998-99 season, four in the Premiership and three in the Worthington Cup.His chances of first-team action increased when Schmeichel left Old Trafford, but van der Gouw still didn't make the No1 slot his own.But all teams aspiring to be great need quality support players and van der Gouw is an integral part of one of the best squads in world football.The likeable Dutchman does have another role at Old Trafford and is a key member of the backroom staff assisting in the development of young players.With the capture of Fabien Barthez and Mark Bosnich, the Dutch keeper was expected to be further down the pecking order, but that wasn't the case as van der Gouw once again jumped the queue to be number two! |
