Paolo Di Canio
West Ham
Born: 7/09/68
Hometown: Rome
Paolo is a gifted, crowd-pleasing forward of the very highest order, possessing a spell-binding array of close ball skills and a powerful shot. However, there is a downside. The Italian has a temper which has been known to overflow into naughtiness.Di Canio joined Celtic from AC Milan on a Bosman free during the 1996/97 season where he charmed the Celtic Park fans with artistry and cunning. The green and white hoops on the terraces went into mourning when, after a dispute with the club over wages, he departed for Sheffield Wednesday in a cash plus player deal, which saw Regi Blinker moving north. The enigmatic Italian made the headlines for the wrong sort of reasons when he was sent off against Arsenal in September 1998 and then proceeded to push referee Paul Alcock to the ground. It was a costly show of petulance. The FA handed him an 11-match ban and a £10,000 fine. Wednesday fined him wages equivalent to £90,000. It was his last game for the Yorkshire club. After serving his suspension he refused to make himself available, claiming he was stressed, and eventually Wednesday lost patience and sold him to West Ham for a knock-down £2m. He settled instantly at Upton Park and scored two goals that will long live in the memory. One was a tremendous finish against Arsenal, after initially clipping the ball over the head of Martin Keown, while the next was a superb 20-yard volley against Wimbledon. He also finished as the Hammers leading scorer with 16 goals in the 1999/2000 season and deservedly claimed the 'Hammer-of-the-Year award'.
