Patrik Berger
Liverpool
Born: 11/10/73
Hometown: Prague
Patrik Berger reached the final of Euro 96 with the Czech Republic, a stage that prompted the Merseysiders to invest in the attacking midfielder. He burst on the scene in explosive fashion with five goals and the Carling Player of the Month award in his first month at Liverpool following his £3.25million move from Borussia Dortmund in August 1996. Patrik favours left or centre midfield but has filled in on occasions in a striking role and possesses a venomous shot particularly with his favoured left boot.He suffered a dip in form after his baptism of fire and frequently found himself on the bench. Just three goals were scored in 28 appearances, 19 from the bench, in season 1997-98, all coming as a hat-trick in a 4-2 victory over Chelsea.Season 1998-99 proved to be Berger's most effective despite Liverpool struggling, as consistency and work-rate have been added to his natural ability, and nine goals in 39 appearances was a fair return. His progress continued in 1999-2000 as Liverpool at last looked like recapturing some of their old glory.
