| Leboeuf was born in the south of France in Marseille on 20 January 1968, but made his name in the north, during five seasons with Strasbourg. He scored 40 league goals during that time, a trend he has continued in England. Despite this success he was relatively unknown to English fans when Chelsea paid £2,5million for him in July 1996. At first it was thought that he lacked the steel needed to succeed in England, but he has added this to his undoubted poise and long-range passing. The acquisiton of Marcel Desailly seemed to settle him down even more and he is now recognised as one of Europe’s finest liberos. His year was crowned by a place in the starting line-up for the World Cup Final, alongside Desailly, after Laurent Blanc had been ruled out through suspension.International success was achieved once again, in Euro 2000. Leboeuf put behind him a difficult season in domestic football to be a member of the France squad that won Euro 2000, with a 2-1 win over Italy. There were some complaints from the footballing central defender that he was being 'roughed up' in the Premiership and for a time he suffered torrents of abuse but he had the last laugh with success in the summer competition. |
