| Despite the mass influx of foreigners into Anfield, Jamie Carragher is a home-grown talent guaranteed to play a big part in the future of Liverpool football club.Having signed from trainee, Carragher made his debut as a substitute but capped his full debut in January 1997 with a headed goal at the Kop end in a 3-0 win over Aston Villa.The versatile defender started season 1997-98 but injury limited his appearances. Nevertheless it was evident that the club had unearthed a gem, who was comfortable at centre-back, while taking the transition to midfielder comfortably in his stride when required.He became a regular in the England Under-21 set-up and represented his country at 'B' level against Chile and Russia.Season 1998-99 saw Carragher as a virtual ever-present in what proved a tough but educational season for the youngster, but competition for first-team places increased during 1999-2000.Carragher holds the record for England Under-21 caps and his progress continued.In 1999 he earned an inclusion in the full England set-up. and made his debut for his country, coming on as a substitute against Hungary in April of that year. |
