| Shaka Hislop |
West Ham Born: 2/22/69 Hometown: Hackney |
| London-born but capped for Trinidad and Tobago, Shaka is a tall, athletic keeper who came to prominence at Reading where he was considered one of the best goalkeepers in the Football League. He found himself on Newcastle's shopping list and signed for the Geordies in the summer of 1995. Hislop started brightly in the Premiership before a loss of form saw him replaced by Pavel Srnicek. He regained a regular place at the start of the 1996/97 season before another dip in form saw him relegated to the subs bench. With the signing of Shay Given, the Magpies gave notice that Shaka was no longer part of their plans and in the summer of 1998 he left to join West Ham on a Bosman-style free transfer.Has settled in well at Upton Park and during the 1998/99 season was an important part of the Hammers defensive line-up which gained a highly-creditable fifth place in the Premiership. In February 2000 Hislop broke his leg while playing against Bradford during a nine goal thriller, although his replacement Stephen Bywater was the man that conceded four goals in a match won 5-4 by the Hammers. |
