Stan Collymore
Oviedo
Born: 1/22/71
Hometown: Cannock
There was little to suggest just how big a star Stan Collymore would become after a low-key first couple of seasons in the professional game, but his career blossomed following his £2million move to Nottingham Forest from Southend.Almost single-handedly Collymore led the Forest attack, scoring a catalogue of wonder goals, picking the ball up deep, beating three or four defenders before finishing in style. Stan was very much 'The Man' and the Premiership beckoned at Liverpool.International recognition was inevitable after a couple of excellent seasons at Anfield but the storm clouds were already gathering.Collymore's enigmatic personality meant that he found it hard to settle, and Brian Little offered him a chance to join his boyhood heroes with a move to Aston Villa. The club record £7million fee proved to be a massive weight around Collymore's neck and his Jekyll and Hyde character led to a series of off-field difficulties which limited his appearances and eventually saw Villa cut their losses.A massive under-achiever, Collymore was offered one last chance to prove himself under Martin O'Neill at Leicester he scored a hat-trick on his Filbert Street debut against Sunderland. However, he sustained a broken leg not long after and missed the rest of the season. The situation was to become worse as Collymore did not make a good early impression on City's new manager Peter Taylor. At the beginning of the 2000/2001 season the wayward star was used mainly as a substitute and made it known he wasn't happy. His advisor also wanted Leicester to open talks on a new contract, after Collymore had literally made just six first team appearances for the Foxes. The Leicester boss refused to open negotiations and questioned the players commitment to the club and subsequently made him available for transfer.
