Nick Barmby
Liverpool
Born: 2/11/74
Hometown: Hull
The refusal to sign a new contract at Goodison Park in the summer 2000 left a bitter taste in the mouth of Everton manager Walter Smith with the club allegedly offering the England international £27,000 per week to stay but Barmby rejected the lucrative terms on offer. To add insult to injury Barmby made it known that he would like to join Merseyside rivals Liverpool. He played in England's Euro 2000 flop in Belgium and Holland and was hailed as one of the few successes for his beleaguered country after also completing a highly successful domestic season 1999/2000.This was a far cry from his disappointing spell with Middlesbrough after he had cost the Teesside outfit in excess of £5million from Spurs in 1995.At the Riverside Stadium he found it difficult to make an impression although the Boro boss Bryan Robson managed to make a £500,000 profit when the player joined Everton during the 1996/97 season after less than two-years with Middlesbrough. The son of an uncompromising midfielder, Jeff Barmby, who played non-league soccer for Scarborough, Nick Barmby is a supremely talented playmaker who eventually showed what he was capable of with his career almost reawakening at Everton.Equally at home on the flanks or in the centre of midfield, Barmby does though have a preference for the left-hand side. His summer move across Stanley Park caused a furore on Merseyside but helped his England ambitions.Barmby played in Euro 2000, being used in the problem left-side position, but after Kevin Keegan resigned as the England manager caretaker-boss Howard Wilkinson left Barmby out of the World Cup qualifier at Finland.
