Egil Ostenstad
Man City
Born: 1/02/72
Hometown: Haugesund
Proved an instant hit when joining Southampton from Viking Stavanger in October 1996. Another Graeme Souness acquisition, the Norwegian striker enjoyed a fabulous first season at the Dell being voted the Player of the Season with the highlight a splendid hat-trick in a 6-3 win over Manchester United. His 14th goal that term relegated Sunderland and secured Saints’ status in the Premiership. The ‘Striking Viking’ continued in the same rich vein of goalscoring form in season 1997/98 and became a subject of much transfer speculation, including a reported £4million bid from Newcastle. Southampton’s huge £7.5million valuation scared off further interest and Eagle faced competition for striking places alongside Kevin Davies and David Hirst. A France ‘98 World Cup call-up for Norway saw Egil make the one appearance against Scotland. After a disappointing season 1998/99 by his standards with just eight goals from 38 appearances, he’ll be looking to get back on the goal trail.
