| This bright young attacking talent arrived at the Dell from Blackburn with a £1million price-tag around his neck but got better with every game as he settled into the pace of the Premiership.Beattie was given limited opportunities at Ewood Park despite being thrust into first-team action as an 18-year-old against Arsenal in 1996. He failed to bring his goal-a-game scoring record in the reserves into the senior side and found himself well down the pecking order. But his big money move to the south coast has seen Beattie's talent blossom.A big strong lad with power and pace, and a potent aerial threat, it didn't take long to break into the England Under-21 set up.Vital goals in Southampton's miraculous 1998/99 escape included a stunning volleyed winner against Leicester followed by another in a 2-0 win at Wimbledon a week later.Limited to just eight league games during the 1999/2000 season, Beattie was linked with a number of other clubs throughout the season but Saints were not keen to sell. |
