Benito Carbone
Bradford
Born: 8/14/71
Hometown: Bagnara
Italian magician Carbone arrived at Villa following an acrimonious split from Premiership rivals Sheffield Wednesday.Having joined the Owls from Italian giants Inter Milan in 1996, he spent three years wowing his adoring Hillsborough fans with his individual brilliance. In the midst of sub-standard foreign imports flooding the Premiership, Carbone's pedigree was undoubted - having worn the number 10 shirt after Maradona at Napoli and Dennis Bergkamp at Inter.Employed as a midfield playmaker or central striker, the skilful Italian scored six goals in his first Premiership season and almost single-handedly saved Wednesday from relegation during the 1998/99 campaign with some crucial goals. However, with his contract nearing an end and a return to Italy looking likely, Wednesday looked to cash in on their star player. A troubled final couple of months in Sheffield reached an unexpected conclusion as he chose to remain in England and signed for Villa.A temporary contract at Villa Park until the end of the 1999/2000 season was not renewed by the club after several weeks of tough negotiations with Carbone returning to Italy.Surprisingly, the talented Italian signed a three-year deal for Bradford City on Agust 9 when many pundits had expected him to join a so-called bigger club.
