| After his red-card reaction to Simeone's crunching tackle in the 1998 World Cup in France, David Beckham knew he was in for a torrid time on his return to England.The 1998-99 season saw the boo-boys out in force, particularly at United's away games, but Beckham silenced his critics by keeping cool and consistently playing to a high standard.He is a technically gifted right-sided midfield player and one of best crossers of the ball and exponent of the long diagonal pass in world football.He is also a brilliant free-kick specialist and scorer of many stunning goals.Beckham was named in the PFA Premiership Team of the Year for 1996-97 as voted for by fellow professionals. In the same year was the recipient of the PFA Young Player of the Year.He was a vital member of United's incredible treble-achieving side of 1998-99 and a regular England international.His marriage to 'Posh' Spice ensured that Beckham was frequently on both the front and back pages of the newspapers.In February 2000 he figured in a much-publicised training ground spat with Sir Alex Ferguson which triggered much transfer talk in the press.All was forgiven and forgotten the following season as Beckham once again became the cornerstone of everything good about Manchester United. |
