| Dave Watson |
Everton Born: 11/20/61 Hometown: Liverpool |
| Watson has been the lynchpin of Everton's defence since 1986 when he signed from Norwich City in a £900,000 deal.Watson was a sheet-metal worker before joining Liverpool juniors in 1979 as an 18-year-old. He slipped through the Liverpool youth net and moved to Norwich where he became club captain at the age of just 23.He formed a formidable central defensive partnership at Carrow Road with Steve Bruce and helped the Norfolk club win the 1985 League Cup Final.Watson originally partnered Kevin Ratcliffe in the Everton defence and he helped to clinch the title in his first full season - 1986/87.He's also won 12 England caps and captained Everton to FA Cup final success in 1995. For most of the 1990's Watson played in a struggling team, but his wholehearted displays won over the Everton fans.On Joe Royle's resignation in 1997, he briefly managed the side before Howard Kendall's appointment. He seems certain to move into a managerial role in the future.Watson moved a step closer to that aim when the dependable defender became first team coach at Goodison Park, alongside manager Walter Smith, for the 2000/2001 season. |
