| Stuart McCall |
Bradford Born: 6/10/64 Hometown: Leeds |
| Arguably Bradford's most popular player of the modern era, McCall boosted the whole club when he returned to Valley Parade in 1998. Having made his debut for Bradford as an 18-year-old in 1982, McCall went on to play for the Bantams for six seasons endearing himself to the City faithful with some battling, wholehearted performances.A big-money move to Everton followed where he scored two goals in an FA Cup Final after coming off the substitutes' bench, only to finish on the losing side. A move to Rangers in 1991 saw him clinch a selection of Scottish medals and bring his number of international caps to 39.Even when Bradford signed him at 34, McCall was still able to produce some fine performances. He combines superb ball-winning abilities with fine passing and surging runs to support the strikers. He was also able to lead by example throughout the successful 1998/99 promotion winning season, showing off his fine motivational skills. After leading the club to Premiership safety in their first season in the top flight for 77-years, McCall was then named as the club's player-assistant manager following the appointment of Chris Hutchings as manager, in succession to Paul Jewell. When Hutchings was fired the following October, McCall was given the manager's job on a caretaker-basis and took charge for the 2-0 defeat at Charlton and 1-0 home loss against Everton. However, he'd already made it known that he did not want to be considered for the job on a full-time basis. When Jim Jefferies and Billy Brown arrived at Valley Parade from Hearts, the City player-assistant manager stepped down to become player-coach, prefering to concentrate on playing. |
