Soccer Preview
Derby vs. West Ham
November 6, 2000
Derby manager Jim Smith will be hoping the arrival at Pride Park of two new defenders and a new assistant manager, Colin Todd, can stem the tide of poor results.

Lilian Martin has received clearance to play in the Monday night clash, but major signing Taribo West will have to side on the sidelines while awaiting international clearance.

The Rams are still firmly placed at the bottom the Premiership table, two points adrift of nearest rivals Bradford City, and will be aiming to end their four game losing streak against fellow strugglers West Ham.

Derby have conceded far too may goals to justify a higher Premiership position and Smith will be hoping the reinforcements can stop the rot in the coming weeks.

Upfront Georgi Kinkladze has so far failed to capture the form that made him into a cult hero at Manchester City, but positive news for the manager is the return to the scoresheet of last season's top marksman Rory Delap in the Rams last two games.

After a disappointing start to the campaign, the Hammers have began to find their feet and are looking for their second win on the trot.

But Redknapp will have to field a weakened defence in the absence of veteran Nigel Winterburn and Derby old-boy Igor Stimac.

The key to the Hammers move away from the bottom of the table has been the ability to grind out results without scoring or conceding many goals.

Star striker Davor Suker has not scored in the Premiership since way back at the beginning of September, but Redknapp will be hoping his goalscoring return to the line-up in their midweek Worthington Cup success is just the tip of the iceberg.

Redknapp will also be hoping for a much greater contribution from young England stars Joe Cole and Frank Lampard, who have gone of the boil a little in recent weeks.
