Soccer Recaps
Perugia 3, Parma 1
October 22, 2000
Parma have continued their bad start in the Serie A. Against

Perugia, normally one of the main candidates for relegation,

they painfully lost 3-0.

After two draws and one defeat Parma take the fourteenth position in the league and coach Alberto Malesani has to fear for his job. Perugia, under the leadership of new coach Serse Cosmi, take ninth position after their first victory this season and they made up for the 3-0 defeat against Lazio Roma last week.

Perugia started very aggressively and opened the scoring within five minutes. A free-kick by Fabio Liverani flew over

Parma goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon against the inside of the

post.

From the rebound Christian Bucchi headed the ball in.

Parma answered with a weak volley by Johan Micoud but immediately after his attempt Perugia doubled the score.

A corner by Fabio Liverani was simply shot in the goal by defender Marco Materazzi for his second goal of the season.

Amazingly, Perugia even scored a third goal. A free-kick by

Elias, a former Parma player, was missed by everybody except Giovanni Tedesco who shot the ball beyond goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon at the far post.

A shot by Marcio Amoroso was neatly tipped out of the goal by Perugia goalkeeper Andrea Mazzantini. On the edge of the break Christian Bucchi almost scored a fourth goal for Perugia when his header flew over the goal.

In the second half Parma were stronger but they just did not

play well enough.

They dominated the game but had to be careful of the quick counter-attacks from Perugia.

Parma had a great chance when Marco di Vaio escaped and gave an assist to Slavo Milosevic.

However, his assist was anticipated at the last moment by a defender from Perugia.

A good header by Fabio Cannavaro was saved by goalkeeper Mazzantini.

French international player Johan Micoud saw his powerful long shot disappear into the goal.It was not enough to create an exciting final phase of the game because Perugia defended brilliantly.
