| Vicenza got their first three points of the season in their relegation battle against Perugia and this win moves the promoted side away from the last spot in the table.
The visitors started the match very well and they had two chances to open the score in the early stages of the game.
But both Marco Materazzi and Jose Ze Maria were unable to put the ball past Vicenza keeper Giorgio Sterchele. Materazzi found himself alone in front of goal, but he shot straight at the Vicenza keeper. Then Sterchele tipped a free-kick from just outside the penalty area by Ze Maria, over the crossbar.
After the chances for Perugia, the home side pulled themselves together and began playng more neat and cohesive football.
Vicenza almost took the lead twice during the first half, but efforts by both Mohamed Kallon and Luca Toni were cleared off the line by Ze Maria.
In the 68th minute the visitors were reduced to 10 men, when defender Materazzi had to take an early bath.
However, the stalemate was broken in dramatic fashion near the end of the match.
Vicenza scored the winning goal in the dying seconds of the game. Perugia defender Marco Di Loreto handled inside the box, referee Collina put the ball on the spot.
The penalty was converted by Kallon, who played for Reggina last season. It was his second goal of the season but he did well to keep his cool and give his team a vital win.
