TEAM NOTES
Coach: Kevin Keegan (May 2001) Premiership
Record: 8-20-10
Rank: 18th, 34 points - RELEGATED
Last Result: 2-1 loss vs. Chelsea, May 19
Streak: Lost 2 Having overseen Manchester City's consecutive promotions in the previous two seasons, Joe Royle will lead the club no more following its relegation back to the first division. Beaten 2-1 by Chelsea on the final day of the season, with Dennis Wise and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scoring for the Londoners either side of Steve Howey's equalizer, Royle was fired on Monday. While the club's departure from the Premiership and differences in opinion about the panned streamlining of the coaching setup at Maine Road contributed to Royle's exit, the board also had become increasingly concerned about the alleged lack of player discipline and their "refueling habits." City chairman David Bernstein would not elaborate, but it has been reported the club was distressed about the players' drinking habits. On Thursday, the club announced that former Newcastle United, Fulham and England coach Kevin Keegan had been appointed as the club's sixth manager in eight years. For the record Shaun Goater was City's top scorer of the season with six goals in the Premiership. He also had five in other competitions.
