TEAM NOTES
Coach: Sir Alex Ferguson (since November 1986) Premiership
Record: 2-2-2
Rank: 10th, 8 points
Last Result: 1-0 loss at Leeds United, September 14
Streak: Lost 2 Next Game: vs. Tottenham Hotspur, September 21 Champions League Group F Last Result: 5-2 win vs. Maccabi Haifa, September 18 Next Game: at Bayer Leverkusen, September 24 Manchester United suffered a second successive defeat in the Premiership, but followed it with a victory in the Champions League. Beaten in the domestic league the week before by Bolton Wanderers at Old Trafford, United lost 1-0 again at Leeds United. Not surprisingly, Rio Ferdinand was given a villain's welcome on his return to Elland Road after his record-breaking transfer and his failure to mark Harry Kewell in the 66th minute allowed the Australian to head home the only goal of the game. ... United dropped down two places as a result to 10th, six points behind the champions and leaders Arsenal. ... On Wednesday night though, after a brief scare by Maccabi Haifa who scored first in the eighth minute, United hit back through Ryan Giggs (10th), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (35th), Juan Sebastien Veron (46th), Ruud van Nistelrooy (54th) and Diego Forlan (89th penalty) on its way to a 5-2 win. Forlan received the biggest cheer of the night when he scored his first goal for United in 27 appearances. ... Gary Neville is ready to make his comeback for Manchester United against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday after being out of action since April. Ruud van Nistelrooy (calf) should be OK to play, but Nicky Butt is ruled out. Last season, Beckham and van Nistelrooy scored two goals apiece as United thrashed Spurs, 4-0 at Old Trafford.
