Man U holds off Lazio Five new teams enter CNN/World Soccer Top 10Posted: Monday August 30, 1999 08:06 PM
ATLANTA (CNN/SI) -- Lazio of Italy may have beaten Manchester United in last week's European Super Cup, but it couldn't dislodge the Champions League title-holders from the top spot in the CNN/World Soccer Top 10, a unique list of club football teams issued each Monday and determined through voting by correspondents from CNN Sports and World Soccer magazine.
Treble-winning Manchester United has held the top spot for each of the poll's four weeks. With its 1-0 win over Man U, Cup Winners Cup holder Lazio moves up five spots to second.
The Top 10 sees its most drastic shakeup to date in week four, with the European season kicking into high gear after the Champions League draw and the start of the Italian Serie A.
Dropping from the poll this week are: Bayern Munich, which has started slow in Germany's Bundesliga; Corinthians, despite staying perfect after seven games in Brazil's championship; Parma, which drew its first league game and lost out on a Champions League spot to Rangers; and AC Milan, which drew its first Serie A match away at newly promoted Lecce.
Coming in at third and fourth, respectively, are Spanish powers Barcelona and Real Madrid. Both teams have the maximum six points after two games in Spain's first division.
Ranking fifth, and making its first appearance in the Top 10, is Italy's Inter Milan, which opened its league season with a 3-0 win over Serie A newcomer Verona. All three goals came courtesy of Ronaldo's US$50-million strike partner Christian Vieri.
Scotland's Rangers -- thoroughly dominating in its domestic league -- rises four spots to sixth after earning a spot in the Champions League with a 2-1 aggregate result against Parma. Next in the list is Argentine league double winner Boca Juniors.
At number eight, Chelsea becomes the first English team other than Man United to make the list, followed by fellow newcomer Juventus of Italy at number nine. European powerhouse Juventus appears despite having drawn its opening league game 1-1 at home to newly promoted Reggina.
Rounding out the list in a tie for 10th are two more teams making their first appearances: defending Dutch champion Feyenoord, untouched so far in its domestic league, and Monaco, which sits atop the French first division table.
