Bayern Munich continues to rise Manchester United still tops CNN/World Soccer Top 10Posted: Monday September 20, 1999 06:47 PM
ATLANTA (CNN/SI) -- Bayern Munich moved up to second place, while Manchester United leads for the seventh consecutive week in the CNN/World Soccer Top 10, a unique list of football clubs issued each Monday and determined through voting by correspondents from CNN Sports and World Soccer magazine. Bayern Munich, ranked seventh two weeks ago, moved up from third to second place with a Champions League win over PSV Eindhoven and a victory against Eintracht Frankfurt in Bundesliga play. But Bayern Munich faces a tough task in trying to unseat Man United, as the German club faces Glasgow Rangers on Tuesday in a Group F Champions League match with all three of its goalkeepers out because of injuries. Stefan Wessels, a 20-year-old who normally plays for Bayern's amateur side, will start between the pipes for the Bavarians. Man United, which posted a disappointing scoreless draw at Croatia Zagreb in the Champions League and drew 1-1 with Wimbledon in the Premier League, will need to rebound if it is to maintain its lead in the CNN/World Soccer Top 10. The Reds face Austrian champion Sturm Graz on Wednesday and Southampton on Saturday. Barcelona fell from second to sixth in the rankings with a 2-1 Spanish Primera loss to tiny Alaves on Saturday. Barca seeks redemption when it battles Fiorentina in a Group B Champions League match on Wednesday. A pair of Serie A clubs took advantage of Barcelona's misfortune to move up two spots in the rankings. Inter Milan jumped from fifth to third, while Lazio claimed fourth place after slipping from third to sixth last week. Real Madrid, desperate for a win after three draws in a week, slipped one spot to fifth. The Spanish club faces Molde on Tuesday in Champions League play. AC Milan (seventh), and Juventus (ninth), give Italy's Serie A four clubs in the CNN/World Soccer Top 10 for the second consecutive week. Brazil's Corinthians, up two spots to No. 8, is the only ranked South American club after Boca Juniors of Argentina dropped out with a 3-1 loss to Velez Sarsfield. Argentina's River Plate, a 3-1 winner over Lanus, just missed out on the Top 10, trailing 10th-ranked Feyenoord of Holland by just one point.
