Lazio increases lead Bayern Munich moves into second-place tie with Man UPosted: Monday November 08, 1999 05:11 PM
ATLANTA (CNN/SI) -- Serie A leader Lazio strengthened its hold on first place in this week's edition of the CNN/World Soccer Top 10, a unique ranking of football clubs issued each Monday and determined through voting by correspondents from CNN Sports and World Soccer magazine. The Italian club, which reclaimed the No. 1 ranking from Spain's Barcelona last week, tops the poll with 105 points. Lazio followed a 1-0 Champions League win over Dynamo Kiev by beating Verona 4-0 in Serie A. Bundesliga leader Bayern Munich joins English Premier League leader Manchester United in a tie for second place in the CNN/World Soccer Top 10. Bayern Munich holds a two-point lead over Borussia Dortmund in the German standings, while Man United overtook Leeds United at the top of the Premier League. Andy Cole provided both goals in the Reds' 2-0 win over Leicester City. Leeds, which dropped out of the rankings, lost 2-0 at Wimbledon. Barcelona was the victim of Bayern Munich's rise in the poll. The Spanish club dropped a 2-1 decision against Malaga and slipped from third to fourth in the rankings. River Plate jumped into the poll at fifth after defeating Union 2-1 to maintain its lead in the league standings in Argentina. French club Olympique Marseille moved up from ninth place to No. 6. Marseille joins Manchester United as the teams to reach the second round of the Champions League out of Group D. Real Madrid returned to the rankings in the seventh spot. Real defeated Spanish Primera leader Rayo Vallecano 3-2 over the weekend and also clinched first place in Group E of the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Norway's Molde. France's Bordeaux, which reached the Champions League final 16 from Group G, ranks eighth. The clubbed dropped one place from last week's No. 7 ranking.
Italian side Juventus and Spain's Rayo Vallecano tied for ninth place with 21 points each. Rayo remained atop the Spanish table despite its loss to Real Madrid, while Juventus stands second behind Lazio in Italy.
