ATLANTA (CNN/SI) -- Manchester United returns to the number-one spot this week in the CNN/World Soccer Top 10, a unique ranking of football clubs issued each Monday and determined through voting by correspondents from CNN Sports and World Soccer magazine.

The English Premier League-leading United squad was the first-ever number one on the Top 10 after winning the treble last year. United kicks off its play in the second round of Champions League competition Tuesday against Italy's Fiorentina.

Man United owes its ascent to a 4-1 defeat suffered by previous leaders Lazio on Sunday against Roma in the Rome derby. Lazio drops to third this week after its 23-game undefeated streak was snapped.

Coming in at second is Bayern Munich, which leads the German Bundesliga after a slow start. Bayern faces Rosenborg of Norway on Wednesday in the Champions League.

In at number four is Italy's Juventus, which is tied with Lazio atop the Serie A standings. Juventus didn't qualify for this year's Champions League; it squares off with Greece's Olympiakos on Thursday in the UEFA Cup.

River Plate remains steady in the list at the fifth spot, after matching number-nine Boca Juniors' win at the weekend to stay three points clear atop the Argentine table.

Spain's Barcelona falls two spots to number six after losing 3-1 to Valencia on Saturday. Barca has the chance to regain stature when it plays Hertha Berlin Tuesday in Champions League action.

French league leader Lyon is seventh this week after defeating Lens 1-0 on a penalty kick. Lyon plays against Germany's Werder Bremen Thursday in the UEFA Cup.

Just two points back in the Serie A, Roma joins the Top 10 at number eight, with a UEFA Cup match set for Thursday against England's Newcastle United. Rounding out the list at number 10 is Inter Milan, which trounced Lecce 6-0 on Sunday, but lost Brazilian forward to a knee injury.
