Man United's best Munich marches on after Matthaeus' departure
ATLANTA (CNNSI.com) -- After posting wins in the English Premier League and the Champions League, Manchester United rose one spot to No. 1 in the CNN/World Soccer Top 10, the unique ranking of football clubs issued each Monday and determined through voting by correspondents from CNN Sports and World Soccer magazine. Man United defeated Girondins Bordeaux 2-1 on the road in the Champions League and then defeated Derby County 3-1 on Sunday in league action. German powerhouse Bayern Munich marched up one spot to No. 2 days after saying goodbye to legendary libero Lothar Matthaeus. For the second week in a row, Bayern routed Real Madrid in the Champions League, this time 4-1 in the farewell match for Matthaeus, who departed to play for the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in U.S. Major League Soccer. In league action, Bayern continued its winning ways atop the Bundesliga with a 4-1 win over Schalke. Dropping from the top spot this week is Italian Serie A leader Juventus, which beat Piacenza 2-0 in league action but was routed out of the UEFA Cup by Spain's Celta Vigo by a 4-2 aggregate score. Staying steady at No. 4 is Spain's Barcelona, which defeated Portugal's Porto 2-0 in the Champions League and thrashed Athletic Bilbao 4-0 in league action. Remaining in the fifth position is second-place Italian side Lazio, which earned two draws last week -- 2-2 with Inter Milan in league action and 0-0 with Feyenoord in the Champions League. Rising two spots to sixth is defending Argentine champ River Plate, which defeated Belgrano 1-0 in league action and drew 1-1 with Colombia's Atletico Nacional in the Copa Libertadores. Coming in next is Inter Milan, which falls one spot after its draw with Juventus, followed by FIFA Club World Champion Corinthians, which was victorious over the weekend in Brazil's Paulista championship. Returning to the list at No. 9 is Leeds United, which ousted Roma from the UEFA Cup last week and moved to within four points of Man United in England after a 2-1 win over Bradford City on Sunday. Rounding out the list is Spain's Real Madrid, despite its two recent losses to Bayern Munich. Real beat Sevilla 3-1 on Sunday in league action.
