Take that, Man Utd Real Madrid, Arsenal overtake Reds in Top 10
ATLANTA (CNNSI.com) -- Manchester United's return to the top was short-lived. The English champions were bypassed by No. 1 team Real Madrid and runner-up Arsenal in the new CNN/World Soccer Top 10, the unique ranking of football clubs determined each Monday through voting by correspondents from CNN Sports and World Soccer magazine. Real Madrid returns to No. 1 follows a strong week for the reigning European champions. Madrid trounced Sporting Lisbon last week in the Champions League before beating Real Sociedad in similar fashion on Sunday. The Gunners leapfrogged their English rivals thanks to a 4-2 win over Sparta Prague in the Champions League and a 5-0 thrashing of Manchester City in the Premier League. Arsenal will travel to Middlesbrough this week in Premier League play. Level on points with Arsenal in England is United, which had a roller-coaster week with a Champions League defeat to Belgium's Anderlecht and at five-goal win over Southampton in domestic action. This week, the Reds travel to Coventry in domestic action. Valencia remains fourth after a week the saw the Spanish side drop its first Champions League match of the season at Olympiakos, before rebounding to defeat Osasuna in league play to remain on top in Spain. In La Liga action this week, Valenica will host Celta Vigo and travel to Espanyol. Deportivo makes it three Spanish sides in the top five, returning to the rankings after an impressive week. The defending La Liga champions defeated Panathinakos in the Champions League and Numancia in domestic play last week. Las Palmas and Villareal are up next for Deportivo in Spanish play. Argentina's Boca Juniors dropped one spot to sixth this week, after a disappointing draw against Colon Santa Fe last week. Boca remains atop the Apertura standings, but now by only four points. Bayern Munich is seventh this week, despite a disappointing week the saw the Bavarian side draw against tiny Helsingborg in Champions league play. Bayern also managed only a draw in Bundesliga action, finishing 1-1 against Werder Bremen. Munich will face Borussia Dotmund in an important Bundesliga match this weekend. Lazio re-enters the rankings in eighth place following a 5-1 thrashing of Shakhtar Donetsk in Champions League play. With the win, the defending Serie A champs moved on to the second round of the competition. Brescia and Bologna are on the schedule this week for Lazio. AC Milan also rejoins the rankings this week after a 2-0 win over Besiktas last week in the Champions League. Milan also advanced to the second round with the victory. A midweek trip to Parma and a home date with Atalanta await Milan this week. A third Italian side, AS Roma, rounds out the top 10 this week. Roma opened its second-round UEFA Cup tie against Boavista last week with a 1-0 win. Roma will try to maintain the top spot in Serie A this week when it faces Inter Milan and Brescia.
