Madrid edges Boca European champions edges ahead of S. AmericansUpdated: Monday January 15, 2001 7:37 PM
ATLANTA (CNNSI.com) -- Spain's Real Madrid edges ahead of Argentina's Boca Juniors this week in the No. 1 spot on the CNN/World Soccer Top 10. While the South American and Argentine champions slid during a period of inactivity, Madrid surged to the top of the table in Spain, surpassing Valencia with a 4-0 victory over Oviedo on Sunday. Defending English champion Manchester United stays at No. 3 after initially struggling on its way to a 3-0 win over Bradford City. United's first goal came from Teddy Sheringham after a woeful blunder by Bradford goalkeeper Gary Walsh. Italian Serie A leader AS Roma rose one spot to fourth despite barely salvaging a 1-1 draw against bottom-club Bari on Sunday. Defending Spanish champion Deportivo La Coruna jumps two ranks to No. 5 after a 2-0 defeat of Valencia, the defending Champions League runner-up that drops three spots to seventh this week in the Top 10. Unchanged at sixth is Brazil's Vasco da Gama, the Copa Mercosur champion that faces Sao Caetano on Thursday to decide the Joao Havelange Cup. Bayern Munich holds steady at No. 8 this week with the German Bundesliga still on winter break, and Italy's Juventus is unchanged at ninth after beating Bologna 1-0. Rounding out the list is Nantes, which held on to the top spot in the French standings despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Auxerre. Other teams receiving votes included Schalke (Germany), Sunderland (England), Galatasaray (Turkey), Anderlecht (Belgium), Liverpool (England), Barcelona (Spain). The CNN/World Soccer Top 10 is a unique ranking of football clubs determined Mondays through voting by correspondents from CNN Sports and World Soccer magazine.
