Breaking through Meinert's goal gives Boston victory in WUSA openerUpdated: Sunday April 22, 2001 9:43 AM
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- Maren Meinert scored in the first half as the Boston Breakers beat the Carolina Courage 1-0 Saturday night in the Women's United Soccer Association opener for both teams. Meinert, one of two German national team members playing for Boston, scored on a breakaway off an assist from defender Keri Raygor in the 14th minute of the first half. Raygor delivered a long pass out of midfield to Meinert on the right wing. Meinert beat Carolina goalie Bente Norby from 20 yards out. The Courage nearly tied the game in final minute, but Silvana Burtini's shot hit the post. Boston outshot Carolina 15-14. Breakers goalie Tracy Ducar finished with six saves. Nordby stopped four shots.
