SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Kelly Smith scored one goal and set up Doris Fitschen's penalty kick as the Philadelphia Charge beat the San Diego Spirit 2-0 on Sunday night in the WUSA opener for both teams.

The Charge took the lead in the 30th minute, when Fitschen converted the penalty after Smith was pulled down by Kristin Bengtsson. Fitschen's shot went under goalie Ulrika Karlsson.

Smith padded the lead by chasing down Spirit defender Rhiannon Tanaka's errant back pass, dribbling past Karlsson and scoring into the empty net 17 minutes into the second half.

Philadelphia goalie Melissa Moore made the lead stand with a series of impressive saves. She turned away a potential goal shortly after halftime by heading away Bengtsson's header.

Moore spent most of San Diego's training camp as the Spirit's third-team goalie before being released on the final day. Philadelphia claimed her off waivers March 30.

The Spirit did a good job of containing San Diego forward Shannon MacMillan, a member the U.S. national team. MacMillan managed just one good shot on goal.

MacMillan did set up Jen Mascaro in the eighth minute with a pass out of the corner, but Mascaro's shot from near the top of the box flew wide of the net.
