Nowhere in sight NHL snipers falling well short of milestone stats

By Jacob Luft, CNNSI.com The 50-goal scorer in the NHL is disappearing faster than XFL television ratings. The 1998-99 season marked the first time since 1969-70 that no player reached 50 goals in a full season. Since then, one player has done it -- Pavel Bure with 58 last season. With 39 goals, Bure is the only sniper with a chance, but he only has 22 more games left this season. From 1977-78 to '97-98, there were at least three 50-goal men every season (with the exception of the 1994-95 lockout year). As recently as 1995-96, there were eight 50-goal scorers. In 1981, Wayne Gretzky turned the hockey world upside down by reaching 50 in a mere 39 games.
There has been a similar decline in 100-point scorers. There were 12 in '95-96 and 21 in '92-93 but none last season and only six in the previous three years. Joe Sakic (80 points through Feb. 20) and Jaromir Jagr (79 points) are the likeliest to score 100 this season.
