NBA breaks trend with exciting 2001 trading deadline
Posted: Friday February 23, 2001 12:38 AM
The NBA trading deadline doesn't stir quite the emotions or anticipation of its baseball counterpart. Well, the NBA broke the mold this season with a flurry of last-minute, impact deals. CNNSI.com's Jacob Luft takes a look at deals made on the NBA trading deadline since 1987, broken down by memorable and not-so-memorable years:
Years to remember
| 2001 |
| Sixers get: |
Hawks get: |
Dikembe Mutombo stands tall in an Eastern Conference devoid of big men. Andy Lyons/Allsport |
|
Dikembe Mutombo Roshown McLeod |
Theo Ratliff Toni Kukoc Nazr Mohammed Pepe Sanchez |
| Knicks get: |
Raptors get: |
Mark Jackson Muggsy Bogues |
Chris Childs 1st-round pick |
| Raptors get: |
Pistons get: |
Jerome Williams Eric Montross |
Corliss Williamson Kornel David Tyrone Corbin 1st-round pick |
| Mavericks get: |
Wizards get: |
Juwan Howard Calvin Booth Obinna Ekezie |
Christian Laettner Courtney Alexander Loy Vaught |
Hubert Davis Etan Thomas $3 million |
| Comment: The Sixers get the big man they need to confront Shaq or Tim Duncan in the Finals. Not having the injured Theo Ratliff available for the next few weeks is actually a boost for the Hawks' lottery hopes. Will the critics who bashed Head Wizard Michael Jordan now praise him for pulling off a trade of salary-cap killer and career underachiever Juwan Howard? |
| 1999 |
| Nets get: |
T'wolves get: | Bucks get: |
Stephon Marbury Elliot Perry Chris Carr Bill Curley |
Terrell Brandon Brian Evans |
Sam Cassell Chris Gatling Paul Grant |
| Sixers get: |
Bucks get: |
The Timberwolves fulfilled Stephon Marbury's desire to get closer to the bright lights of New York City. Andy Lyons/Allsport |
|
Tyrone Hill Jerald Honeycutt |
Tim Thomas Scott Williams |
| Cavs get: |
Celtics get: |
Andrew Declercq 1st-round pick |
Vitaly Potapenko |
| Knicks get: |
Sixers get: |
| Mirsad Turkcan |
1st-round pick |
| Grizzlies get: |
Rockets get: |
| Rodrick Rhodes |
Sam Mack |
| Comment: The Bucks did well to get Terrell Brandon in return for Stephon Marbury, who would have left as a free agent after the season. The under-appreciated Sam Cassell always has been just good enough to get traded. |
| 1996 |
| Heat get: |
Warriors get: |
Tim Hardaway helped usher in a winning era in Miami. Eliot J. Schechter/Allsport |
|
Tim Hardaway Chris Gatling |
Kevin Willis Bimbo Coles |
| Heat get: |
Kings get: |
Walt Williams Tyrone Corbin |
Billy Owens Kevin Gamble |
| Hawks get: |
T'wolves get: |
Christian Laettner Sean Rooks |
Spud Webb Andrew Lang |
| Comment: Pat Riley came into Miami and cleaned house, eventually bringing in Alonzo Mourning to help out a rejuvenated Tim Hardaway. Chris Gatling gets traded more often than the typical Pokemon card. |
| 1994 |
| Jazz get: |
Sixers get: |
Jeff Hornacek Sean Green 2nd-round pick |
Jeff Malone 1st-round pick |
| Hawks get: |
Clippers get: |
| Danny Manning |
Dominique Wilkins 1st-round pick |
| Hornets get: |
Bucks get: |
Frank Brickowski 1st-round pick |
Mike Gminski |
| Comment: Jeff Hornacek became an integral part of Utah's two Western Conference championship teams. The Hawks traded the franchise's most popular player for a rental. |
| 1989 |
| Kings get: |
Celtics get: |
Danny Ainge Brad Lohaus |
Joe Kleine Ed Pinckney |
| Knicks get: |
Blazers get: |
| Kiki Vandeweghe |
1st-round pick |
| Comment: Getting rid of Danny Ainge signaled the beginning of the end of the Celtics' heyday. |
| 1988 |
| Suns get: |
Cavs get: |
Kevin Johnson Tyrone Corbin Mark West 1st-round pick Two 2nd-round picks |
Larry Nance Mike Sanders 2nd-round pick |
| Bucks get: |
Suns get: |
| Jay Humphries |
Craig Hodges 2nd-round pick |
| Sonics get: |
Bulls get: |
| Sedale Threatt |
Sam Vincent |
| Comment: The Suns ended up with a franchise point guard in Kevin Johnson. |
Years to forget
| 2000 |

| 1995 |

Scott Brooks |
| 1993 |
| Bulls get: |
Warriors get: |
| Ed Nealy |
2nd-round pick in 2001 |
| Bucks get: |

| 1992 |
| Knicks get: |

| Benoit Benjamin |
Olden Polynice Two 1st-round picks |
| 1990 |
| Spurs get: |
Warriors get: |
| Uwe Blab |
Christian Welp |
| Clippers get: |
Warriors get: |
| Winston Garland |
Two 2nd-round picks |
| Knicks get: |
Hornets get: |
| Stuart Gray |
2nd-round pick |
| Cavs get: |
Hornets get: |
| 2nd-round pick |
Randolph Keys |
| Timberwolves get: |
Sonics get: |
| Brad Sellers |
Steve Johnson 2nd-round pick |
| 1987 |
| Bulls get: |
Cavaliers get: |
| Ben Poquette |
2nd-round pick |
| Comment: After eight long years of waiting, the Warriors will finally reap the dividends this year from that Ed Nealy trade back in 1993. Regarding 1991, it's hard to figure out who got the worst of that Benoit Benjamin-for-Olden Polynice swap. |
