Cinderellas collide Double-digit seeds don't meet often in second roundUpdated: Saturday March 17, 2001 2:08 AM
By Jacob Luft, CNNSI.com It's turning out to be the year of the double-digit seed in the NCAA tournament. With the first round complete, nine teams seeded 10th or higher have advanced to the second round. And two are guaranteed to make it to the Sweet 16. When No. 15 seed Hampton plays No. 10 seed Georgetown in the second round Saturday and No. 12 Gonzaga meets No. 13 Indiana State on Sunday, it will be the 11th and 12th matchups of double-digit seeds in NCAA tournament history. Teams seeded 10th or higher most recently met in 1998, when it happened twice: Bryce Drew's Valparaiso (13) squad beat Florida State (12) and Washington (11) defeated Richmond (14) (see chart, below). The deepest two double-digit seeds have met in the tournament is the 1997 Sweet 16, when Providence (10) defeated Chattanooga (14) 71-65. Since 1985, 35 double-digit seeds have advanced to the Sweet 16. Only seven took the next step to the Elite 8, with the only region winner being 11th-seeded Louisiana State in 1986.
On another note, the victories by Hampton and Georgetown, combined with 11th-seeded Georgia State's defeat of No. 6 Wisconsin, made for three double-digit seeds advancing in the West Region. The South also has three teams seeded 10th or higher in the second round -- No. 11 Temple, No. 12 Gonzaga and No. 13 Indiana State. The most double-digit seeds to win a first-round game in the same region is four, which has been done twice:
