Host hospitality Home-field advantage hasn't guaranteed World Cup titlePosted: Monday July 12, 1999 03:25 PM
By Desmond M. Wallace, CNN/SI The U.S. women's soccer team had the joy of celebrating its Women's World Cup championship with the home fans. But in the World Cup, home-field advantage hasn't always guaranteed a victory. The Americans became the first women's host nation to win the World Cup and just the seventh host champion overall. Last summer France became the first men's host in 16 years to claim the Cup.
While no women's hosts entering this year had even made it to the finals, two men's teams have fallen at home in the finals. In 1950, Uruguay upset Brazil in Rio de Janeiro. Eight years later, the Brazilians smashed Sweden in Stockholm.
However, the Chinese women's team knows both sides of home-field disappointment. In 1991, host China was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Sweden. Four years later, China knocked out host Sweden, also in the quarters, on penalty kicks.
