Victory hug: Sanchez Vicario shares a moment with her family after winning the French Open (AP) |
PARIS (AP) -- After her French Open win over Monica Seles in the women's final on Saturday, Sanchez Vicario climbed up to the players' box to hug her family, her coaches and her Yorkshire terrier.
The dog, named Roland, after Roland Garros, has his own stadium pass and goes to all of his owner's matches, accompanied by Arantxa's mother.
By now, he's a veteran of the French Open. He's been here 10 years. That's 70 in dog years.
"He knows all the spots, he knows all the places. He's friendly with all the people," said Sanchez Vicario. "I mean, obviously he enjoys it here a lot, too."
Names to remember
Remember these names: Juan Carlos Ferrero and Fernado Gonzalez. The Spaniard and the Chilean are playing the boy's singles final at the French Open on Sunday.
It's always a good idea to keep track of the junior winners, because they often come back to show their talent in the men's tournament.
This year, 1995 junior French Open champion Mariano Zabaleta of
Argentina caused a stir when he beat No. 2 seed Petr Korda in the first round.
Charming Ronaldo
Brazilian soccer star Ronaldo has turned a few heads at the French Open. Russian teenager Anna Kournikova went out to the stands to meet him at a fourth-round match between Cedric Pioline and Marat Safin.
On Wednesday night, Ronaldo got another visit from a tennis star. Arantxa Sanchez Vicario went to the Red Star stadium at Saint-Ouen to see an exhibition match between Brazil and Andorra. Sanchez Vicario lives in the principality of Andorra.
Despite the loss of the Andorrans, Sanchez Vicario showed her sense of fair play, and went to the locker rooms to say hello.
Ronaldo was so charmed, he gave her his soccer jersey.
