Fine time: Ivanisevic will be fined for his outburst AP

NEW YORK (AP) -- Goran Ivanisevic's temper cost him at the U.S. Open Tuesday in his fourth-round loss to defending champion Pat Rafter.

In the fifth game of the fourth set, with Rafter serving and leading 3-1, Ivanisevic wasted three break points. The third time, a frustrated Ivanisevic slammed his racket to the court.

Referee Mike Morrissey gave Ivanisevic a code violation, and since the Croatian player earlier had been called for ball abuse after hitting the ball up in the stands after another outburst, the second violation cost him a point penalty.

"It was a chance to get me back in the match. And then I come up with three bad returns, two miss-hits completely and one backhand," Ivanisevic said. "Then it's tough. He's pumped, then I got a penalty point."

Instead of being deuce, Rafter had the ad, and won the next point for a 4-1 lead.

Ivanisevic dropped his serve in the next game and Rafter held to win the match, 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Ivanisevic also will be given a fine for his outbursts.
