NEW YORK (AP) -- Highlights of Tuesday's play in the $14 million U.S. Open tennis championships:

Weather: Overcast and cool with a brief shower and a high of 74.

Attendance: Day: 19,150. Night: 16,762. Total: 35,912.

Results: Swedes Jonas Bjorkman, Magnus Larsson and Thomas Johansson, along with Carlos Moya, Karol Kucera, Mark Philippoussis and defending champion Patrick Rafter, advanced to the men's quarterfinals. Wimbledon champion Jana Novotna and defending champion Martina Hingis advanced to the women's semifinals. Novotna beat Patty Schnyder 6-2, 6-3. Hingis beat Monica Seles 6-4, 6-4.

Stat of the Day: Karol Kucera is the only player other than Jim Courier in 1991 to beat Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras in a Grand Slam event in the same year. Kucera beat Sampras in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

Quote of the Day: "Last night had its own elements. He [Kucera] was just returning the ball, winning points. All of a sudden, when I returned the ball, he wasn't ready to hurt me. Today he was and he did." -- Andre Agassi.
