NEW YORK (AP) -- Highlights of Wednesday's play in the $14 million U.S. Open tennis championships:

Weather: Partly cloudy, windy with brief showers in the early afternoon and a high of 68.

Attendance: Day: 18,219. Night: 19,826. Total: 38,045.

Results: Defending champion Patrick Rafter beat No. 12 Jonas Bjorkman in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5, to advance to the semifinals. Top-seeded Pete Sampras beat No. 9 Karol Kucera 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 to set up a semifinal match with Rafter. Sampras leads 8-2 in head-to-head matches with Rafter.

Lindsay Davenport, the No. 2 seed, gained her second straight semifinal berth at the U.S. Open with a 6-0, 6-4 win over No. 13 Amanda Coetzer. Fifth-seeded Venus Williams, after dropping the first set, rebounded for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over No. 4 Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario. Williams and Davenport will meet in the semifinals, with Davenport holding a 4-1 lead in head-to-head matches.

Martina Hingis and Jana Novotna, the top-seeded doubles team, beat No. 14 Barbara Schett and Patty Schnyder 6-3, 6-4 in their quarterfinal match.

Stat of the Day: It took Lindsay Davenport just 18 minutes to take the first set in her victory over Amanda Coetzer.

Quote of the Day: "I've been brought up in the wind, whether it's winter or summer it's very windy conditions. I've played in that since I'm 10 years old." -- Patrick Rafter, who grew up in the Australian town of Mount Isa. Rafter beat No. 12 Jonas Bjorkman, who played in long sleeves on a chilly afternoon made even colder by a 24-mph wind.
