With his second-round win over Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Hrbaty raised his French record to 4-2. Hrbaty also remained perfect against Kafelnikov at 3-0. This is the second straight year that Hrbaty has advanced to the third round at Roland Garros. He was ousted last year by Alberto Berasategui in four sets.

Career highlights
Hrbaty was named the ATP Tour Newcomer of the Year in 1996. He won his first career title in 1998 at the Internazionali di Tennis di San Marino. His highest career ranking is No. 25, achieved the week of May 3, 1999.
