No. 1 3 - ?

Heading into the 1999 U.S. Open, Sampras is on one of the hottest streaks of his career. Dating back to the Queen's Club tournament, which he won two weeks before collecting his sixth Wimbledon title, Sampras went on a 24-match winning streak that included four titles, pushing his career total to 60. The streak ended when a hip flexor injury forced him to retire from a quarterfinal match in the RCA Championships. Sampras looks poised to break the Grand Slams record at the tournament where he grabbed his first Slams title nine years ago. However, he will face stiff competition from the other top seeds. Andre Agassi is playing great, Yevgeny Kafelnikov is once again rolling and Patrick Rafter is looking to become the first three-peat champion at the U.S. Open, since Ivan Lendl (1985-87).
