SANTIAGO, Chile(Reuters) -- Former world No. 1 Marcelo Rios will be absent from the tennis tour for four months after undergoing surgery on his pelvis, local newspapers reported on Thursday.
The Chilean left-hander, currently ranked ninth in the world, will miss the Australian Open in January and will be doubtful for Chile's Davis Cup tie against Canada in February.
Because of the injury to his pelvis, Rios said last week he had decided not to play in the season-ending ATP Tour world championship in Hanover, which starts on November 22, and this week's Stockholm Open.
"The operation went without a hitch," said one of the surgeons, Roberto Yanez. "For four months he is not going to be able to compete on court."
