Sampras has won the Australian Open on two previous occasions. He first won it in 1994 and last won it in 1997. Last year, he sat out the tournament, citing fatigue. Coming off an injury-plagued season, Sampras begins his quest for the Grand Slam record in an unfamiliar position -- the No. 3 seed. In his 12 Grand Slam victories, he was seeded no lower than No. 2. But, Sampras ended 1999 on a positive note, defeating No. 1 Andre Agassi 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 to win the ATP Tour World Championship.
