Moving on Brazil eliminates France, headed to quarterfinals
FLORIANOPOLIS, Brazil (Reuters) -- Brazil beat 1999 runners-up France to reach the Davis Cup quarterfinals on Saturday with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win in the doubles. Gustavo Kuerten and Jaime Oncins eased past untried French duo Cedric Pioline and Nicolas Escude to clinch a last eight tie against Slovakia. Escude was the weak link in the French pairing, losing his serve in the third game of the match and then in the first game of both the second and third sets. Oncins was in fine form, especially on his backhand, while Kuerten -- playing on his hometown courts -- whipped up the crowd to keep the pressure on France, who lost to Australia in last year's final. Pioline did not look happy with the playing conditions, especially with the antics of the crowd that let off balloons at one stage.
