John McEnroe John McEnroe: "I believe there is no one else around that plays a better doubles game than I do." Clive Brunskill/Allsport

LONDON (Reuters) -- John McEnroe urged the incoming United States Davis Cup captain to revive his first class playing career on Tuesday.

McEnroe is preparing for the Seniors Tour tournament at the Royal Albert Hall where he is due to face old rival, Swede Bjorn Borg, for what could be the last time.

The American resigned as U.S. Davis Cup captain in November, and the United States Tennis Association is in the process of naming his successor.

But McEnroe, 41, said: "I want to play doubles in the Davis Cup again -- it is a serious offer on my behalf.

"I believe there is no one else around that plays a better doubles game than I do.

"Whether the new captain, whoever that may be, feels the same way and considers it a realistic option, is another matter.

"At least I can be happy and proud that I represented my country in the past, and helped them win five Davis Cups."
