French favorite Davenport says Hingis will be tough to beatPosted: Friday May 26, 2000 12:00 AM
PARIS (Reuters) -- Lindsay Davenport says world number one Martina Hingis will be very hard to beat at the French Open. "She is again the arch-favorite this year," Wimbledon champion Davenport told sports daily l'Equipe. "Martina wants the French more than anything else. Everyone knows that and I don't think she will lose her temper like she did last year," the American world number two added. Hingis lost last year's final to Steffi Graf after her game collapsed when she argued about a line call. The French Open is the only Grand Slam tournament the Swiss teenager has not won. "Martina won the three other slams some years back and she wants the fourth one badly, she's very honest about it too," said Davenport whose game is not made for Roland Garros clay. "We have a different approach to the tournament. Personally, I know it's going to be tough and I will go more for the fun of it," she said. "I can't believe I have a real chance to win. Martina wanted the title last year, she wants it even more this year, she will do everything to win," she added. But the Australian Open champion said that despite a number of injuries this season and lingering wrist problems which she said she had to learn live with, her confidence was high. "I built so much confidence last year and over the past six months that anything can happen at the French," she said. "I have not been so bad here as I have lost to the future winner for the past two years," Davenport added. "If I play well, I will be hard to stop."
