Serena Williams Defending champion Serena Williams lost in the singles quarterfinals to Lindsay Davenport. AP

NEW YORK (AP) - Serena Williams, beaten by Lindsay Davenport in the U.S. Open quarterfinals, withdrew from the doubles competition Thursday because of an inflammation in her left big toe.

The injury is described as chronic, but Williams was described as probable for the Olympic tennis tournament, which begins September 19.

Williams and her sister, Venus, defending doubles champions at the Open, were scheduled to play their semifinal match on center court against Cara Black and Elena Likhovtseva Thursday.

Serena's withdrawal put Black and Likhovtseva in the finals for the doubles title.
