Unseeded team makes history
NEW YORK (AP) -- Teamed for the first time, Lleyton Hewitt and Max Mirnyi became the first unseeded team to win the U.S. Open men's doubles title when they defeated fourth-seeded Ellis Ferreira and Rick Leach 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (5) on Friday. The victory stretched Hewitt's doubles winning streak to 11 straight matches. Mirnyi has won 10 of his last 11 in doubles. Hewitt, a semifinalist in the men's tournament, remained in the running to become the first man since John McEnroe in 1981 to win the U.S. Open singles and doubles titles in the same year.
Triple CrownWhen Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario teamed with Jared Palmer to win the U.S. Open mixed doubles, it completed an Open triple crown for her. Sanchez-Vicario won the singles title in 1994 and took the women's doubles that year with Jana Novotna, a year after she captured the same title with Helena Sukova. Palmer and Sanchez-Vicario defeated Max Mirnyi and Anna Kournikova 6-4, 6-3, to capture the first Open championship of the 2000 tournament.
Heineken's starTodd Martin's marathon act keeps earning him the Heineken Star Award. The award for grit and determination went to Martin a year ago after he overcame a two-set deficit to defeat Greg Rusedski. And when Martin repeated the escape act against Carlos Moya in a 4-hour, 17-minute match that ended at 1:22 a.m., he got a second straight Heineken award. John McEnroe will present the award, which includes a contribution of $5,000 to the Todd Martin Development Fund, on Saturday.
