Cranking it Krajicek's serve too much for KohlmannPosted: Monday June 26, 2000 11:09 AM
LONDON (Reuters) -- Dutchman Richard Krajicek, the 11th seed and 1996 Wimbledon champion, recovered from his customary slow start on Monday to beat German outsider Michael Kohlmann 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 in the men's singles. Krajicek, the only man in the last seven years to defeat Pete Sampras at Wimbledon, started by losing his service twice in the first set on Court Two, known as the graveyard of champions. But his booming delivery and powerful ground strokes reasserted themselves against the German, only given a place in the men's draw when clay court specialist Albert Costa pulled out in a protest about the seedings policy at Wimbledon. The giant Dutchman thudded down a string of aces and sewed up a victory by taking the tiebreak 7-3. Krajicek is ranked outside the top 20 but earned his seeding because of his success on grass.
