Venus wins opener Posted: Tuesday June 27, 2000 01:49 AM
LONDON (Reuters) -- Venus Williams cruised through to the second round of Wimbledon after defeating Kveta Hrdlickova 6-3, 6-1 on Monday. The fifth seed started the match sluggishly, losing her serve twice in the first set including her opening service game. But the American kept up the pressure with powerful forehands which Hrdlickova failed to return time and again. The 24-year-old Czech, who had not advanced past the first round in her previous two outings at the championships, ran out of steam in the second set and failed to hold her serve once. Williams wrapped up the second set in 21 minutes after Hrdlickova double-faulted on match point.
