Andre Agassi Agassi regrouped and broke Dent's serve three times in taking the second set. AP

LONDON (Reuters) -- Andre Agassi survived a first-set pummeling at the hands of 256th-ranked qualifier Taylor Dent before booking his second-round spot at Wimbledon when his fellow American retired at 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, 4-0 on Tuesday.

The 1992 champion was totally outclassed and out-hit on Centre Court in the 25-minute opening set by a man who was playing the first match of his life on grass.

Dent, whose father Phil played 12 Wimbledons and reached the quarter-finals in 1977, looked like a grasscourt veteran, serve-and-volleying and chip-and-charging past the six-times Grand Slam winner.

It was too good to last, though, as Agassi got to grips with his opponent, stepped in closer to return his serve and produced a flurry of winners whenever he needed them.

He broke Dent three times in the second set to level matters before stepping up a gear. Agassi won the next five games before Dent had his left knee strapped by the courtside trainer. Five games later, with Agassi leading the fourth set 4-0, Dent retired.
