Lindsey Davenport showed no ill effects from her back injury as she cruised to a first-round victory. AP

LONDON (Reuters) -- Defending Wimbledon champion Lindsay Davenport was comfortably beating close friend and doubles partner Corina Morariu 6-3, 1-0 on Tuesday when Morariu was forced to quit after slipping and falling heavily.

The second seed had been in total control when her fellow American slipped and fell awkwardly on her left arm. The injury meant she was unable to continue.

Davenport looked to have fully recovered from the back injury which had plagued her since May as she started in powerful style.

She broke in the first game with a thumped forehand winner against the graceful Morariu and again in the ninth game with a series of searing groundstrokes to seal it 6-3 in 29 minutes.

Playing within herself, but clubbing winners at will, Davenport won the opening game of the second set before her doubles partner was forced to pull out.

The pair are the reigning Wimbledon doubles champions.
